Why Sprout? Because it's so dang easy and nutritious! Sprouts are a way of ingesting living plants that are absolutely thriving with nutrients and vitamins. They can be wonderfully tasty as well and it's so easy to sprout at home with My Big Fat Nut (milk) Sacks that it would just be a crime not to do so.

Growing your own sprouts is easy but does require a bit of time as all good things do. Just as with making your own nut milk, it's always wise to soak what you'd like to sprout. Soaking allows for easier digestion, superior nutrient intake and enhanced flavor.
So... what can you sprout? Most seeds, nuts, grains and legumes will sprout but only if they're raw and not heat treated or pasteurized. See below for a handy dandy soaking and sprouting chart for how long you need to soak and sprout those seeds.

Put your sprout babies i.e. seeds into your nut milk bag and rinse your seeds to eliminate any particulates before you begin sprouting.

1. Soak for the required amount of time in a big bowl of cool water.
2. Drain the water.
3. Rinse thoroughly with cool running water.
4. Hang your bag and allow the magic to happen.
5. Repeat this rinse/hang process until your sprouting time is complete and your sprouts are ready.

Easy peasy!

Sprouted foods are susceptible to contamination from bacterial growth so make sure to keep everything you use nice and clean. Consume within 2-3 days and make sure that you store your sprouts properly in the refrigerator.

Sprouts are delicious and yummy and can be eaten raw in salads, sandwiches and smoothies and can also be cooked in stir-frys or soups.

Certain seeds may release colors when soaked which may discolor your bag. This is normal and to keep your bag fresh and clean, refer to our previous blog posts on how to clean and care for your nut sacks.

Which version of our nut sacks is best for sprouting? Some say organic hemp, some say nylon. It really comes down to your own personal preference.

Happy Sprouting!

The Use and Care of Your Organic Nut Sacks

Organic nut sacks are the bees knees but it's very important to keep those sacks clean. It's imperative to wash them after each use so that they last longer and are fresh and healthy. Clean nut sacks are healthy nut sacks.

When you first receive your organic nut sacks, make certain to rinse them in hot water, with our without soap, whichever you prefer. It will help to soften them up and prepare them for first use.

Always air dry them in a well ventilated area and make sure that your nut sack is completely dry before storing it away.

The sacks are very durable so they can be washed in the washing machine if you prefer. However, detergents can degrade the material over time and are not food safe. Also, lint isn't super tasty in your nut milk!

If your sacks do come into contact with oils or fats, (for example if you use it to strain bone broth) make certain to wash with a mild detergent.

From time to time or even after every use if you choose, you can sterilize your sacks by boiling them for a 2-3 minutes in plain hot water or a diluted mixture of water, vinegar or baking soda. Drying in direct sunlight is also a great way to help sterilize AND dry your sacks.

To keep your sacks smelling fresh and to release any natural staining, soak them for about 20 minutes in the solution of your choice before rinsing clean and drying thoroughly. We like to soak our nut sacks in a solution of 1 cup of water with 4 tbsp of salt and a dash of grapefruit seed extract for extra freshness. Other great alternatives are water solutions made with hydrogen peroxide, vinegar or baking soda.
